| My husband Bob and I have a fondness for good horses. In 2008 we moved from South Dakota to an acreage in Woodbury county, Iowa, which would allow us to expand and grow our Equine business. A nurse by trade, I am also blessed with the ability to successfully interact with horses and speak their language. Over the last few years, I have worked with horses on many levels, studied pedigrees all hours of the day and night, and spent many a long hour watching market trends and analyzing the equine industry as a whole. It's no secret, the equine industry on most levels is in trouble. Thus being, we are shifting our focus in the upcoming year of 2010 and revamping our program. I will still offer equine instruction, such as the occasional riding lesson, but I hope to make a greater impact with clinics and teaching people about the equine species in general and relationship building with their own horses. Eventually we plan to breed a few Spanish and Spanish related Arabians and one or two Quarabs or 1/2 Arabians. Our breeding program will be very focused on quality and selection of the finest conformation and temperament for whatever discipline is best for that particular breeding combination. We are not looking to breed for "numbers" only. We want to design horses that have a purpose, horses that can be used for something other than just standing around looking pretty. Lord knows, there are enough horses out there that are just plain going to waste. Horses that breeders can't sell, and horses that desperately need homes. We have taken on the responsibility of horses that wouldn't have had a home otherwise (not our breeding stock) some from a rescue type situation, and rather than give up on them I plan to make them the best horse possible for us to keep and use, or find them a new home where others can do the same. Regardless, they are my responsibility and I am committed to doing my best with them and for them. Horses that we have that can only be used as companion horses have a forever home with us, but I can't take on anymore at this time. Thus, my greatest time commitment will be in the form of training or re-training the horses that still have a future. All of our horses are interacted with on a daily basis, and have had only the gentlest of methods of handling. They have all the care that they need plus some. Yes, I know horses will be horses, but ours do have excellent manners because they are always treated fairly. I expect the same from any foals or horses that I would sell to a new home. I am committed to doing an honest business. If one purchases a horse from me, they will know exactly what they are getting. I am fair in all dealings with people as well as animals. I have to admit, personally I'm appalled at the scandal and dishonesty in this industry. The end result are horses that are sold and resold, and sold again, perhaps they will even end up on an auction block somewhere. It's always the animals that suffers more than the humans. I am hopeful that the Equine industry will pick up in the near future. Nancy Dyer |
